The Path of Darryl Curran: from the 1960s - the present (and the Origins of Conceptual Photography)--Conversation between Darryl Curran and Eric Joseph
⠀⠀
Recent, pre-quarantine visit to my college art photography professor’s solo exhibit and talk with Eric Joseph at dnj Gallery. It was great to see Darryl after all these years, and realize I was a part of conceptual art photography history in the making. Daryl shared some of the history of inkjet printing as it relates to art photography, showing examples of Jet prints (using Kodachrome) and Iris inkjet prints (flatbed drum scanner). He also showed a comparison of the early Kodachrome inkjet print next to a current-day inkjet print of the same image--we’ve come a long way since those days. ⠀⠀ #darrylcurran #dnjgallery #santamonicalife #conceptualartphotography #artphotographyhistory #historyofartphotography #artphotography #csufcreativephoto

As a photographer and Sr. VP at Freestyle Photographic, Eric shared his expertise as it relates to photographic paper choices and image selection. Using his own photographs as examples, in one he printed an image on three different papers (cityscape images)--if you look closely, you will see the subtle differences in color, saturation, shadows and details. Eric added that he often thinks of paper choice as he is shooting an image; anticipating what kind of surface would enhance the photo. Loved this concept--definitely worth keeping in mind for future prints. It really was great to see up close the various printed examples. If you get a chance to take a workshop with Eric, I would highly recommend him. ⠀⠀

⠀⠀
Little did I know on this day (in late February) that this would be the last art exhibit my godfather and I would attend together. My godfather was a Latvian-born artist who emigrated to the US after fleeing war-torn Latvia and living several years in a DP (Displaced Persons) camp in Germany. He lived and painted in Santa Monica for approximately 65 years--in the same apartment complex at the corner of 4th and Pier. He was always on the move--working, landscaping and helping others. ⠀⠀
A trained fine art oil painter, at the age of 94 I showed him how to draw on an iPad, and he never looked back. The following year, we headed to Paris to see my son who lives there, visit the Pompidou and Louvre (I couldn’t get him to leave!). After Paris, we flew to Latvia, where he had what we believe is the first iPad drawing exhibit in the country--16 original digital drawings printed on display. A couple months later, we published a book of these original drawings. “Never stop learning...” he would say. Well done. Well done. ⠀⠀ You were a legend. You were truly one of a kind. I miss you...
